After the seemingly final defeat of the Sith, the Republic enters a state of complacency. In the waning years of the Republic, the senate was rife with corruption and scandal, and saddled with a bureaucracy so immense that effective governing was nearly impossible. The ambitious Senator Palpatine caused himself to be elected Supreme Chancellor, and promised to reunite the galaxy under a New Order. It is during this time that the events of Episodes I (The Phantom Menace), II (Attack of the Clones) and III (Revenge of the Sith) occur. Also occurring within the Rise of the Empire era, but given their own sections for convenience, are:
the Clone Wars (events between Episodes II and III): the three-year long galaxy-wide conflict between the Jedi and clone forces of the Republic and the droid armies of the Separatists;
the Dark Times (events between Episodes III and IV): following Order 66 and Palpatine declaring himself Emperor of the first Galactic Empire, the flame of the Jedi has all but been extinguished, however the seeds of rebellion are being sowed by a few surviving Jedi and their supporters.
