"The
Deadly Hunter reads as a huge prologue to another story. It
meanders and wanders through a trail of suspects in an investigation
undertaken by Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon in order to help out a friend of
the Jedi, Didi Oddo. It seems to lack any sort of definite purpose
– yes, it introduces a sinister new adversary for the Jedi pair;
yes, it showcases Watson’s writing skill in terms of the finesse
of her description and her combat scenes; yes, the investigation the
Jedi are sent on keeps you guessing about the true nature of the
problem.
"However, I just didn’t care.
"Watson introduces new characters here, all of whom seem flat
and uninteresting. I found it very difficult to engage with the
story because of this; there is no tension to a situation if you do
not empathise with the participants. Didi and his daughter just
seemed rather bourgeois – ironically, I suffered the same feelings
that Obi-Wan did at the start of the story. Unlike Obi-Wan, though,
I didn’t warm to them. Only at the end, when there occurs a large
cliff-hanger, did I feel anything.
"The story is well constructed and well written, but I didn’t
connect with it in any way, which made for a fairly lacklustre
read."
