"The
Final Showdown, as the title suggests, sees an end to the Omega
story arc that has run through the majority of the Jedi
Quest series. Anakin, his Master and his fellow Padawans journey
to Korriban where Omega is due to meet with "the Sith".
"As with the majority of Watson's writing, it is the characters
and their thoughts that make up the most compelling parts of the
book. Obi-Wan doesn't yet realise how deeply the Dark Side is
penetrating his Padawan and how far Anakin will go to satisfy his
anger and ego. Anakin convincingly manages petulantly to turn every
situation into being someone else's fault, believing that since he
is the Chosen One that he can and must be the best. Even when he
cannot do this, he manages to persuade himself that he is
unconcerned by the consequences of his actions and of situations.
The book also sees the death of one of the characters, a scene that
is incredibly poignant.
"The conclusion of the series was very appropriate, but the
nature of it meant that there wasn't as much closure as one might
typically be expecting; this removes some of the satisfaction that
one would normally feel, although this does help us to empathise
with Anakin at the end of the story.
"Overall, the Jedi Quest series has
been a great sequel to the Jedi
Apprentice series, in some ways surpassing it as it lacks some
of the protraction that occasionally plagued its predecessor. The
characterisations are fantastic as always and her insight into
Anakin's plight is very convincing. A very enjoyable series."
