Synopsis:
If young Anakin Skywalker is to become a Jedi he must
follow the teachings of his Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. He
must also find a way to overcome his fears, including
the memory of the man who killed his friend Qui-Gon Ginn
-- the vicious Darth Maul. Anakin and Obi-Wan are on an
escort mission, ensuring that a freighter does not
become the next victim to the vicious pirate and slave
trader Krayn. But it will take more than Jedi to keep
Krayn from his prey. Anakin and Obi-Wan venture into
Krayn's ship to keep him at bay. Anakin must fight his
hatred of the slaver if he is to finish this mission,
but the temptation to stop Krayn may prove to be too
much for the young Padawan!
Captured by Krayn, a ruthless pirate and slave trader,
Anakin is bound into servitude and thrust into the
dangerous spice factories of Nar Shaddaa. Obi-Wan
prepares to infiltrate Krayn's operations to rescue his
beloved Padawan. Anakin, without his lightsaber, must
again fight for freedom and help his fellow slaves.
A disguised Obi-Wan infiltrates the slaver Krayn's spice
factories on Nar Shaddaa to free his Padawan. Amidst the
processing of spice and cruel working conditions, Anakin
befriends some slaves and plants seeds of revolt.
Imprisoned and forming an alliance with the mysterious
Siri, Anakin's only hope for freedom lies in his ability
to convince his fellow slaves that Krayn's rule over the
spice factories can be shattered by the unity of the
masses.

"Path
to Truth is a stand-alone young reader book that is, in many
ways, premonitory. In it, Obi-Wan and Anakin face a pirate group
that deals in slaves, with many links made to Anakin's origins
including a very effective prologue.
"Watson makes links to her previous series, the Jedi
Apprentice books, which gives the story grounding and the
characterisations remain spot-on. Anakin is a very different Padawan
to Obi-Wan, as Watson demonstrates with Anakin's reckless plan to
infiltrate the pirate ship and his defiant flashes.
"As to its premonitory aspects, there are several scenes where
Anakin must confront his past as a slave and his feelings regarding
his mother. Both of these issues and the resulting feelings help to
set up the fall to the Dark Side that occurs in Attack
of the Clones and Watson does a good job of accentuating
Anakin's ties to his mother and the rooting of his fears about her.
As Anakin is collecting his crystals in order to construct his
lightsabre, his reactions to the mental tests are very revealing.
"Hopefully the rest of the Jedi Quest
series will be as intelligent as this opening instalment. It makes a
brilliant intermediary between Episodes I and II."
