Synopsis:
The battle against the evil Empire rages on as heroic
men, women, and aliens of the Rebel Alliance continue
their struggle to end the era of darkness. But the
ultimate defeat of the Imperial forces could come from
within the Empire itself.
The Imperial grand moffs are in revolt against the
Prophets of the Dark Side. As the Rebel Alliance
struggles with its latest weapon, Project Decoy,
Princess Leia is kidnapped by an old enemy, then menaced
by the surprise appearance of another evil foe-one
obsessed with turning Leia to the Dark Side.

"Queen
of the Empire sees a spectacular return to form for Paul and
Hollace Davids after the mediocrity of Mission
from Mount Yoda. The fifth book in the Jedi
Prince series brings back all the trademarks: ludicrous plot
points, appalling slips of character and unimaginative writing. Here
are a few examples:
1)
This book's environmental issue is that the planet Chad is under
threat from burping bovines and the person who describes this is
Han Solo, because we all know that Han is a secret Greenpeace
warrior.
2) Han and Leia elope. Not only is this startlingly out of
character, but they elope to (wait for it) Hologram Fun World.
Seriously.
3) The heir to the Empire, who naturally is a pacifist, whispers
secret experimental weapons designs in his sleep.
4) Hologram Fun World is beset by ruthless bounty hunters who use
their blasters to (brace yourselves) draw graffiti on the walls
(so naughty, those bounty hunter types!)
5) Princess Leia has stage fright. Princess Leia, the woman who
faced down Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin and insulted them
both, has stage fright...Princess Leia, the woman who stood and
presented medals to the Battle of Yavin heros in front of the
entire Alliance, has stage fright...
6) The Moffs hold a Mofference on board the Moffship (for the love
of Pete!)
"It
just goes on and on and on, unfortunately. Thankfully Ken gets much
less screen time in this book and, more importantly, this is the
penultimate book of the series. This book is impossible to read
without laughing at it, in a similar way to my being unable to write
this review without being sarcastic and scathing." |
