Synopsis:
Though the Sith War has ended, several Jedi are
disappearing mysteriously throughout the galaxy – only
to have their mutilated corpses turn up thereafter. The
Jedi Council orders a full investigation, and it is
determined that the Jedi are being killed by Sith-spawned
terentatek. In what comes to be known as “The Great
Hunt,” the Jedi track down and hunt down these
insatiable creatures until they are almost extinct. When
rumor is heard of terentateks on the ancient Sith world
of Korriban, the Council on Dantooine declares the hunt
over yet secretly sends three of the best Jedi
beasthunters to Korriban: Duron Qel-Droma, Guun Han
Saresh and Shaela Nur. It is hoped that these three
friends can overcome the tarentatek quickly and quietly
-- and withstand the strong temptation toward the Dark
Side that Korriban would offer. This decision is not a
unanimous one, as some feel that three Jedi are not
enough. “And sending a Qel-Droma to Korriban? That’s
just asking for trouble…”
The three arrive at Dreshdae, a settlement near the Sith
ruins, and start their investigation. A week later, the
trio are already struggling against temptation. Duron is
tormented by visions of a dark not-too-distant future,
Shaela is becoming increasingly attracted to Duron, and
Guun is bedding local women to get information. When
Guun intervenes in Duron and Shaela’s relationship,
the two accuse him of arrogance and self-righteousness.
(Understandable though unfair -- Saresh came from a
wealthy family on Taris known for arrogance and
cruelty.) He asks a simple question: “Can you control
your passion?” If it means renouncing their love for
each other, Duron replies, no they can’t. Guun gives
them a datadisc with the coordinates of the Valley of
the Sith Lords – coordinates he got out of a local
woman’s bed – and leaves the "fools"
behind.
Although disheartened by the path his former companions
have taken, Guun nonetheless vows to uphold the mandate
given him by the Jedi Council to exterminate the
Terentatek creatures wherever he finds them. He hears
rumors that one such beast may exist in the lower
jungles of Kashyyyk, and he journeys there in an attempt
to prove that he requires the presence of neither Duron
nor Shaela to win his victory. Guun Hal Saresh is slain
in the Shadowlands, three days after leaving Korriban,
by the very beast he is hunting. His personal journal
will remain lost for decades to come, as will the
powerful headband created for him by his father.
On Korriban, Shaela and Duron are overwhelmed by the
Sith beasts in the Valley. Duron is the first to fall,
leaving a shattered and revenge-minded Shaela to head
alone into the tomb of Naga Sadow. As she attacks the
tarentatek with blind fury, her lightsaber – the
Solari crystal of which can only be used by the pure of
heart – deactivates itself. The Council senses their
deaths, and decides not to send any Jedi in search of
their remains.
