Synopsis:
Luke Skywalker has returned to his home planet of
Tatooine in an attempt to rescue his friend Han Solo
from the clutches of the vile gangster Jabba the Hutt.
Little does Luke know that the Galactic Empire has
secretly begun construction on a new armored space
station even more powerful than the first dreaded Death
Star.
When completed, this ultimate weapon will spell certain
doom for the small band of rebels struggling to restore
freedom to the galaxy…
Luke Skywalker and his company have arrived on Tatooine
in an attempt to rescue Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt's
desert palace. First the droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO, arrive
with a holographic message from Luke pleading Jabba to
release Solo, but they end up as slaves. Later Princess
Leia Organa (in the guise of bounty hunter Boushh)
arrives with "prisoner" Chewbacca to collect
the Wookiee's bounty. Jabba sends Chewbacca to the
prisons. That night, Leia releases Han from his
carbonite coffin, only to be overseen by Jabba, his
minions, and now-slave droids. Both Han and Leia are
captured; Solo is put in the prison with the Wookiee
while Jabba takes Leia as his personal slave girl. To
Leia's humiliation, she is then chained by the neck to
Jabba's throne.
Luke eventually arrives, coming at dawn to make one
final plea to Jabba to release Solo, but Jabba rejects
the offer and Luke falls into the Rancor pit. Luke
successfully kills the rancor, but he too is captured by
Jabba's minions. As punishment, Jabba, using C-3PO as a
translator, commands that Luke and his male companions
are to be killed (over a course of a thousand years) by
the man-eating Sarlacc at the Great Pit of Carkoon.
At the Pit of Carkoon Luke retrieves his lightsaber
(hidden inside R2-D2) to battle his captors. Solo, still
temporarily blinded from the after effects of
carbonization, destroys the jetpack of bounty hunter
Boba Fett, sending Fett to his supposed death within the
Sarlacc. Meanwhile, Leia strangles Jabba to death with
the very chain that binds the two together. Han, Leia,
Chewbacca, Lando and C-3P0 depart Tatooine for the
rendezvous point where the Rebel Alliance is assembling,
while Luke and R2-D2 head for Dagobah to fulfil a
promise made some time earlier.
Luke and R2 arrive on Dagobah to find a terminally-ill
Yoda. Luke has returned to complete his Jedi training,
but Yoda declares no further training is required. All
that remains for Luke is to confront Vader. Yoda then
reveals that Vader is indeed his father. The
900-year-old Jedi Master gives one last mention of
wisdom to the young Jedi before he dies.
Before Luke leaves Dagobah, the spirit form of Kenobi
confirms that Vader was once Anakin Skywalker, a former
Jedi Knight who turned to the dark side of the Force.
Kenobi also reveals that Luke has a twin sister, hidden
from Luke at birth as protection from the Emperor. Luke
senses that his sister is actually Princess Leia. Kenobi
warns Luke to bury his feelings, for they could in time
"serve the Emperor."
At the rendezvous point the Rebel Alliance gathers to
reveal plans to attack the second Death Star, currently
under construction near Endor. As part of the plans,
Luke, Leia, Solo, and a strike team must penetrate the
shield generator bunker on the fourth moon of Endor in
order to deactivate the Death Star's protective shield
if the Rebel fleet is to attack the Death Star.
Upon their arrival on Endor the strike team is
discovered by scout troopers. While trying to prevent
the Imperials from communicating the rebels presence,
Leia is lost in the forest where she encounters one of
the native inhabitants, Ewoks.
Meanwhile Luke, Han, Chewbacca and the droids try to
find Leia but fall into a booby trap set by the Ewoks.
The Ewoks proclaim C-3P0 as a god but when Leia arrives
the Ewoks are convinced to free their prisoners and
assist the rebels in destroying the Imperial shield
generator.
Luke has decided that the time has come to leave Endor
and face Darth Vader, but not before he tells Leia. Leia
is utterly speechless and shocked, but is comforted by
Solo. Luke surrenders to the Imperial garrison and is
taken to Vader and the Emperor on the Death Star. Luke's
attempts to bring Vader out from the Dark Side fail as
both the Rebel fleet, emerging from Hyperspace, and the
rebel strike team on the Endor moon have walked into a
trap conspired by the Emperor himself: the Death Star is
fully operational and his best regiment are guarding the
shield generator bunker.
On the forest moon, Han, Leia, Chewbacca and the rebel
strike team are captured by the Imperial garrison but
the droids and Ewoks orchestrate a rescue with an
all-out attack on the Imperials. Eventually, the rebel
strike team gain access to the bunker and destroy the
shield generator.
In space, the rebel fleet is forced to move closer to
the Imperial Star Destroyer fleet as the Death Star's
primary weapon begins to assert severe damage to the
rebel fleet. Lando and Wedge Antilles lead the attack on
the Death Star in the Millennium Falcon and a X-Wing.
On the Death Star, Luke, goaded by the Emperor, lashes
out with his lightsaber only for it to be deflected by
Darth Vader, and thus the final duel between father and
son begins. The duel is ferocious with Luke eventually
cutting of Vader's mechanical right hand. With Vader
defeated the Emperor orders Luke to kill Vader. Angered
by Luke's refusal to do his bidding, the Emperor strikes
Luke down with Force lightning. As Luke begins to
succumb to the pain he calls to his father for help. In
his final act Vader redeems himself by hurling the
Emperor into a reactor shaft, thus destroying the
Emperor. Vader's last words to Luke, as he lay dying in
his son's arms, was that he was proud of Luke and that
Luke was the man he once wanted to be.
Meanwhile, with the protective shield now down, the
Millennium Falcon and Wedge's X-Wing enter the bowels of
the Death Star and fire missiles at its main reactor
beginning a chain reaction that will destroy the Death
Star. Luke commandeers a shuttle to escape the doomed
Death Star taking the body of his dead father.
Seeing the destruction of the Death Star from the forest
moon, Han senses Leia's love for Luke. He offers to step
aside when Luke arrives, but she tells Han that Luke is
her brother.
That evening Luke sets a funeral pyre ablaze to burn the
body of his father and catches sight of the spirit
figures of Ben Kenobi, Yoda and the redeemed Anakin
Skywalker. Leia takes Luke by the hand and they rejoin
their friends and colleagues as the spirits continue to
look on with pride.
